Global Kids & Teens Director - Megan Wetzel
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on the third Monday in January. This year it is celebrated on January 17th, 2022. This national holiday is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. The day of service celebrates Dr. King's life and legacy as a civil right's leader.
As Moms Against Racism, our mission is to "do the work, starting at home." Let's make the commitment to honor Dr. King by celebrating this day with our families as "a day on, not a day off!" Our children are watching and learning from us. It is our job to provide an example of advocacy and community engagement.
Check out events offered within your local community. You can find events through the AmeriCorps organization. Below is a list of activities that can accommodate all families:
Attend a local MLK parade with your family.
Write a letter to local officials about a cause you believe in.
Send caring cards to senior centers.
Paint kindness rocks and hide throughout your neighborhood.
Gather your old towels and rags and donate to an animal shelter.
Donate gently used books and toys to a local thrift shop.
Take a grocery trip and collect items for a food pantry.
Create blessing bags for people experiencing homelessness.
Pick up litter at a local park.
Donate your gently used stuffed animals to a local firehouse or police station to give to children in emergencies.

I hope you take the time this year to share the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with your children.
"Everyone can be great because everyone can serve." -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
